murder story

On April 1, 1990, police were called to a fire in downtown Bridgeport, Connecticut. After the fire was put out, they found the body of 30-year-old Sharon Cunningham in a burning sports car. An examination revealed she had been strangled with a cloth, and DNA found on her indicated that she may have been raped.

The second murder took place on March 28, 1992. Police found the body of 29-year-old Minnie Sutton in her living room. She had been stabbed multiple times, and signs of strangulation were present. Her three-year-old son was at home but was unharmed. DNA evidence suggested she had also been raped.

The third victim was Elizabeth "Maxine" Gandy, a 33-year-old woman. She went missing on Easter 1993 and was later discovered in an abandoned building. Her body was topless, and her pants were unfastened, suggesting sexual assault. Her body showed signs of a struggle, and DNA was found under her fingernails, indicating she fought against her attacker.

The killer's final victim was 29-year-old Sheila Etheridge. On June 28, 1993, she was found dead in her apartment. An autopsy suggested she had likely been sexually assaulted. Materials at the scene contained DNA evidence that pointed to a male suspect.

On July 11, 1994, police discovered the body of 36-year-old Evelyn Charity in Vidalia, Georgia. She had been strangled and stabbed. A few days later, authorities arrested Emanuel Lovell Webb, who was found with Charity's stolen car. During questioning, Webb confessed to the crime but claimed it was an accident during a consensual act.

After serving time for Charity's murder, Webb was paroled in 2001. However, in November 2005, he was detained for a parole violation. His DNA was collected at that time and matched to the unsolved murders in Bridgeport. Investigators then linked Webb to the deaths of Cunningham, Sutton, and Gandy as well.

Webb was extradited to Connecticut in February 2007. He faced charges for Gandy's murder and eventually was linked to the other three fatalities. He initially chose to plead no contest, avoiding a full admission of guilt. In May 2008, charges related to Etheridge's case were dropped, but DNA evidence confirmed his involvement in all the other murders. He was convicted and sentenced to 60 years in prison, where he remains as of 2024.
