1983 - 2001Edwin "Ned" Snelgrove was born on August 9, 1960, in New Jersey. He grew up in a middle-class family and had a seemingly normal childhood.
He attended Cook College at Rutgers University, where he graduated in 1983. During his college years, he was described as a bright student and was involved in various activities. Snelgrove was known to have had a relationship with Karen Osmun, a fellow student who was also studying computers at Rutgers.
In 1983, when he was 23 years old, Snelgrove became the prime suspect in the disappearance and murder of Osmun. She was reported missing by her family after failing to show up for a planned dinner on Christmas Eve. Her body was later discovered in her apartment, leading to suspicions surrounding Snelgrove.
After his college years, Snelgrove engaged in various jobs, including a position at Hewlett-Packard. His life began to take a darker turn as he struggled with violent thoughts and urges. In letters written during his incarceration in the late 1980s, he expressed that he had fantasies of harming women from a young age, which he attributed to feelings that started in elementary school.
On December 24, 1983, Edwin Snelgrove killed Karen Osmun, his former girlfriend. Karen was a 23-year-old graduate student at Rutgers University. Her family reported her missing after she did not arrive for dinner. The next day, police found her body in her apartment. She had been stabbed multiple times and also strangled. Although Snelgrove was suspected of the crime, he was not charged until several years later. In 1988, while in prison, he admitted to killing Karen in a letter.
In 1987, Snelgrove attacked Mary Ellen Renard, a 44-year-old woman he had just met at a nightclub. After spending time together, he followed her to her apartment and assaulted her. Mary Ellen fought back and managed to escape, leading to Snelgrove's arrest. Snelgrove pled guilty to the attack and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
After serving almost 11 years, Snelgrove was released on May 26, 1999. Following his release, he moved to Connecticut. On September 21, 2001, he was with Carmen Rodriguez, a 22-year-old woman who disappeared after leaving a bar with him. Carmen's body was discovered on January 6, 2002, wrapped in trash bags in Rhode Island. Snelgrove was charged with her murder in 2003.
During Snelgrove's trial in 2005, the court allowed evidence of his past crimes to be presented. This included letters he wrote that detailed his violent sexual fantasies and previous convictions. The jury found him guilty of murdering Carmen Rodriguez, and on April 15, 2005, he was sentenced to life in prison. Snelgrove's appeal was denied by the Connecticut Supreme Court in 2008. He remains incarcerated for his crimes.
