April 19, 1996Edward Zakrzewski was born on January 31, 1965. He grew up in a family environment that is mostly not well documented. There is little information about his early life, education, or childhood experiences. He eventually became an adult and started a family of his own.
Zakrzewski married Sylvia, and together they had two children, Edward and Anna. Over time, there were reports of marital problems between Edward and Sylvia. These issues reportedly caused tension in their home life.
At some point, Zakrzewski was working at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. His job there involved serving in the military. As time passed, the problems in his marriage continued to grow, and they were reportedly discussing divorce.
There are no public records detailing his relationships with friends or coworkers, or how he interacted with his community. Information from neighbors suggested that he had expressed feelings of distress regarding the state of his marriage, hinting at a serious dissatisfaction with his family's situation.
Edward Zakrzewski’s early life experienced its challenges, but the details remain limited. His later actions would overshadow any information about his upbringing or family life.
On June 9, 1994, Edward Zakrzewski killed three people: his wife, Sylvia, and his two children, Edward and Anna. That morning, Edward Jr., who was seven years old, called his father at the Eglin Air Force Base. He told Zakrzewski that Sylvia wanted a divorce. After this call, Zakrzewski bought a machete during his lunch break.
Later that evening, Zakrzewski came home before his family. He hid the machete in the bathroom. When Sylvia and the children returned home, he attacked Sylvia first, hitting her multiple times with a crowbar. He then strangled her with a piece of rope. After that, he called Edward Jr. into the bathroom under the pretense of brushing his teeth. There, Zakrzewski used the machete to kill his son.
Next, he called his daughter, Anna, into the bathroom. There are different accounts of how Anna was killed, but it is known that she also died from machete attacks. After the murders, Zakrzewski moved Sylvia's body to the bathroom and assaulted it again with the machete.
Following the killings, Zakrzewski drove to Orlando and boarded a plane to Hawaii. In Hawaii, he changed his name and lived with a religious family. He later turned himself in after they recognized him from a show called Unsolved Mysteries.
Zakrzewski was arrested and tried for the murders. He was convicted and sentenced to death on April 19, 1996. During the appeals process, he made several claims about the trial proceedings, but his convictions were upheld by the Florida Supreme Court.
