murder story
On April 17, 1990, Kim Wildman made a 911 call to the Missouri City police, claiming she had been stabbed multiple times in her home. The call ended abruptly, and when police arrived, they found her dead body on the kitchen floor. They investigated her neighbors, including 17-year-old Edward McGregor, but there was no evidence linking him to the crime. The case went cold after a few years as investigators only had a DNA sample from the crime scene.
On May 25, 1994, Edwina Barnum was found dead in her bathroom after neighbors noticed her door had been kicked in. An autopsy revealed that she had been strangled with a belt. Investigators struggled to find suspects, and the case also went cold. Barnum's mother pushed for a re-investigation in 2004.
On August 5, 2005, Danielle Subjects was discovered dead in her home by her roommates. An autopsy showed she had been raped and killed a few hours prior to their arrival. The killer took valuables but left DNA evidence behind. Similarly, on February 4, 2006, Mandy Rubin was found dead in her bathtub. Friends entered her apartment to find her body, and it appeared that she had fought with her attacker.
Edward McGregor was arrested on May 2, 2006, in connection with the murder of Kim Wildman after his DNA was matched to the evidence found at her home. He had lived quietly in the Houston area since the murder and had no prior arrests. After his arrest, police started investigating his possible connection to the murders of Subjects and Rubin.
McGregor was released on bail in May 2006 but was re-arrested on December 1, 2006, when DNA linked him to Barnum's murder. He faced conflicts with cellmates during his time in jail. Investigators found that McGregor had called both Subjects and Rubin shortly before their deaths.
He was prosecuted in 2010 for Wildman's murder since he was only 17 at the time, which meant the death penalty was not an option for prosecutors. Despite evidence against him, including allegations he had confessed, he maintained his innocence. Family members testified on his behalf, claiming he was at home during Wildman's murder.
In September 2016, McGregor requested a new trial, arguing that the DNA evidence was weak and that witness testimonies should be questioned. He claimed one witness lied and that she did not live near Wildman. In November 2019, the prosecutor faced sanctions for misconduct, which raised questions about the fairness of McGregor's trial. However, his appeals were denied, and he remained in custody.
