On October 29, 1984, 16-year-old Lucia Aimar was killed in Charleston County, South Carolina. Authorities said the murder happened during a robbery attempt that turned violent. Matthews shot the teenager, causing her death.
He was arrested soon after the crime and later convicted of murder. A South Carolina court sentenced him to death. Matthews spent more than a decade on death row while pursuing appeals and clemency efforts.
After his final appeals were denied, he chose lethal injection instead of the electric chair. On November 7, 1997, Earl Matthews Jr. was executed in South Carolina.
