1992Dwayne Weeks was born on August 19, 1963. He grew up in New Castle County, Delaware. Little information is available about his early life, including his family background or childhood experiences.
As a young adult, Weeks married Gwendolyn Weeks in 1983. Their marriage faced many difficulties. Police reports and court documents later described a history of domestic violence between Dwayne and Gwendolyn. At some point, Gwendolyn decided to leave Dwayne due to this abusive behavior. She sought legal advice about divorce and moved into a high-security apartment in Wilmington to protect herself.
Weeks’ life outside of his marriage was troubled, with issues such as substance abuse and run-ins with the law. His troubled relationship with Gwendolyn and his ongoing struggles contributed to the path that led to his later actions.
After their separation, Dwayne's relationship with Gwendolyn continued to be strained. She had taken significant steps to distance herself from him, which included seeking help and legal support. The two did not reconcile, and Dwayne's behavior during this time reportedly escalated.
In the months leading to the tragic events, Dwayne's anger and resentment grew, largely due to his estrangement from Gwendolyn. This turbulence in his marriage and his personal issues played a significant role in shaping his life during this period. While some details of his background are sparse, the consequences of his early life experiences and choices became pivotal in the events that followed later in 1992.
On April 10, 1992, Dwayne Weeks and his accomplice, Arthur Govan, planned to attack Weeks' estranged wife, Gwendolyn Weeks, and her boyfriend, Craig Williams. They broke into Gwendolyn's apartment in Wilmington, Delaware. At the time, Gwendolyn was on the phone with a 911 operator, reporting that someone was trying to get into her apartment. Weeks entered and shot her twice in the head.
Govan, meanwhile, shot Craig Williams three times. Both victims were found on the living room floor by police, who arrived shortly after the gunfire. Gwendolyn was shot twice in the head, and Craig sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
After the murders, Weeks attempted to make the act appear as if it were part of a robbery. He stole Gwendolyn's purse before fleeing the scene. Police apprehended him within an hour, leaving his residence with his girlfriend. Initially, she claimed Weeks had been home all day, but later admitted he had been out.
Weeks was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He pled guilty the following year. In September 1993, he was sentenced to death, and his accomplice Govan received a life sentence without the possibility of parole.
Dwayne Weeks was executed by lethal injection on November 17, 2000, approximately eight years after the murders. His execution was a subject of appeal, but the U.S. Supreme Court declined to intervene shortly before the execution took place.
