Bio

Duncan Peder McKenzie Jr. was born on October 5, 1951, in Chicago, Illinois, United States. He later moved to Montana, where he lived as an adult. By the early 1970s, McKenzie had relocated to a rural area near Conrad, Montana. At that time, he was living in proximity to the residence of Lana Harding, a young schoolteacher. His presence in the area placed him near the location where the crime would occur. At the time of the offense, McKenzie was 22 years old.

Murder Story

On January 21, 1974, Duncan Peder McKenzie Jr. abducted 23-year-old Lana Harding from her residence near Conrad, Montana. During the incident, Harding was subjected to prolonged violence. Evidence presented at trial established that she was physically assaulted and strangled. The injuries resulted in her death.

Following the crime, investigators began gathering evidence and identified McKenzie as a suspect after reports placed his vehicle near the scene. He was arrested the following day, January 22, 1974. In 1975, McKenzie was convicted of aggravated kidnapping and deliberate homicide involving torture. He was sentenced to death.

The case remained active in the courts for over two decades as McKenzie pursued multiple appeals at both state and federal levels. His conviction and sentence were repeatedly reviewed and upheld, including by the Montana Supreme Court and federal courts. Legal challenges included claims related to jury instructions and procedural issues, but none resulted in overturning the sentence.

After spending approximately 20 years on death row, McKenzie was executed by lethal injection on May 10, 1995, at Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge. He was the first person executed in Montana following the reinstatement of the death penalty in the United States.
