— Doyle Edward Skillern
Doyle Edward Skillern was born on April 8, 1936. Growing up, he faced a difficult childhood.
As a young man, Doyle became involved in various activities that would later define his life. He struggled with substance abuse issues, which impacted his decisions and relationships. Throughout his life, he would be arrested multiple times for different offenses.
Skillern's criminal history began accumulating in his early adulthood. Many of his crimes were related to drug offenses and robbery. This path eventually led him to more serious crimes.
By the early 1970s, he had established a lifestyle that was heavily connected to illegal activities. His actions during this time eventually culminated in a significant crime that changed his life forever.
On October 23, 1974, Doyle Edward Skillern, along with an accomplice, was involved in a fatal incident that led to the murder of Patrick Randel, a state narcotics agent. Randel was working undercover and had arranged to buy illegal drugs from Skillern and his accomplice, Charles Victor Sanne. Concerned that Randel might be an informant, Skillern and Sanne decided to meet Randel in a more isolated location after an initial meeting in a motel room.
During the meeting, they agreed to drive Randel to a roadside park to finalize their transaction. Skillern followed Randel in another car. Once they arrived at the park, Sanne shot Randel multiple times. Randel was found dead in his locked car later that day. Shortly after the murder, Skillern and Sanne were arrested. Skillern had possession of both the money meant for the drug deal and Randel's gun.
Skillern and Sanne were tried for capital murder, which involved intentionally causing Randel’s death during a robbery. At trial, Sanne testified that he was the one who shot Randel, claiming it was an accident provoked by Randel drawing a weapon. Despite Sanne's testimony and Skillern's claims of limited involvement, both were convicted of capital murder.
Following their convictions, Skillern was sentenced to death, while Sanne received a life sentence based on his lesser criminal record. Skillern's sentence was later affirmed and upheld through various appeals and legal proceedings. His last statement before execution on January 16, 1985, was a plea for forgiveness for his family.
