Doreen Baird was a 14-year-old schoolgirl born in 1944. On July 14, 1958, in Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England, she was babysitting five children. One of them was sixteen-month-old June Croft, who was crying more than the others.
Baird tied a scarf around the child's neck to try to stop the crying. The child died of strangulation. Police arrested Baird the same day.
At her trial at Sheffield Assizes she pleaded diminished responsibility. Medical evidence described her as emotionally immature and of low intellect. On November 27, 1958, she was found guilty of manslaughter and sent to an approved school.
