1982Donald Anthony Miller was born on June 12, 1962, in Harris County, Texas. He had 11 years of education and worked as a painter. He was 19 years old when he was arrested for the murders of Michael Mozingo and Kenneth Whitt. Before the murders, Miller already had a criminal record. In 1980, he pleaded guilty to stealing a truck and was placed on probation. Later that same year, he pleaded guilty to stealing another vehicle. His probation was then revoked, and he was sent to prison.
By early 1982, Miller was connected with Danny Ray Woods and Eddie Segura. The three men planned to rob two traveling furniture salesmen from North Carolina. The victims, Michael Mozingo and Kenneth Whitt, were selling furniture from an 18-wheel truck and were carrying cash from their business.
Miller, Woods, and Segura pretended they wanted to buy furniture. They used this fake purchase plan to lure Mozingo and Whitt to Segura’s house. Their real goal was to rob the men.
On February 2, 1982, Michael Dennis Mozingo and Kenneth Whitt delivered furniture to Eddie Segura’s house in Harris County, Texas. Mozingo was 29 years old, and Whitt was 19. They were traveling furniture salesmen who sold furniture from an 18-wheel truck.
Donald Anthony Miller, Danny Woods, and Eddie Segura had pretended they wanted to buy furniture. When Mozingo and Whitt arrived, Miller and Woods pulled out guns. Miller had a handgun, and Woods had a sawed-off shotgun.
The two victims were forced to lie down. Miller, Woods, and Segura robbed them of money and personal items, then tied them with tape and rope. The victims were first placed back into their truck and later moved into Segura’s car. Miller, Woods, and Segura drove Mozingo and Whitt to an isolated area near Lake Houston. During the drive, the victims pleaded for their lives.
When they reached the remote area, Mozingo and Whitt were taken out of the car. Miller told them they would not be hurt and told them to walk toward a fence. As they walked, Woods fired the shotgun and Miller fired his handgun. Mozingo and Whitt were both shot and killed. The next day, February 3, 1982, a fisherman found their bodies near Lake Houston. Both men had been shot, and their hands were still tied. Investigators also found evidence at the scene, including bloody footprints and part of a shotgun.
After the murders, Miller, Woods, and Segura divided the stolen money. They also tried to sell or store the stolen furniture. Police later found Miller’s fingerprints on one of the stolen tables. Miller was arrested about two weeks after the murders. Eddie Segura pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and testified against Miller. Danny Woods pleaded guilty to murder and received two life sentences. Miller was tried for the capital murder of Michael Mozingo.
In October 1982, Miller was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. His conviction and sentence were upheld on appeal. Miller spent nearly 25 years on death row. In 2004, a federal court temporarily overturned his death sentence, but in 2005, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated it. His final appeals were later denied.
On February 27, 2007, Donald Anthony Miller was executed by lethal injection in Huntsville, Texas. He did not give a final statement. He was pronounced dead at 6:16 p.m. He was 44 years old.
