murder story

On June 7, 2003, Devin Moore was taken into custody at the Fayette police station after being accused of stealing a car. While being booked, he suddenly attacked Officer Arnold Strickland. Moore grabbed Officer Strickland's handgun and shot him. Officer James Crump heard the shots and ran to the scene. Moore encountered him in the hallway and shot him as well. Afterward, he continued down the hallway to the dispatcher’s area, where he shot Leslie Mealer.

After the shootings, Moore stole a police cruiser and fled the station. He was apprehended later in Mississippi. When caught, he told the police, "Life is a video game. Everybody's got to die sometime." Moore quickly confessed to the murders, stating that he shot the officers and the dispatcher because he did not want to go to jail.

In the legal proceedings that followed, Moore faced trial in 2005, where he pleaded not guilty. The trial judge did not allow the defense to argue that the video game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" provoked his actions. Moore's attorney argued that he was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder due to past abuse. However, in August 2005, Moore was found guilty on three counts of murder.

On October 9, 2005, he was sentenced to death by lethal injection. His attorney filed an appeal, but in February 2012, the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals upheld his conviction. The legal battle over Moore's actions also included civil lawsuits against the companies behind "Grand Theft Auto" for their role in the events that took place.
