March 13, 2007Devendra Sharma was born in India. He grew up in a family that valued education. Sharma worked hard in school and pursued a professional career in medicine. He became a doctor of Ayurvedic medicine, which is a traditional form of healing in India that is over 5,000 years old. After finishing his studies, he opened his own Ayurvedic clinic in Aligarh.
Despite his education and training, Sharma struggled in his practice. There were difficulties that made it hard for him to run a successful clinic. These challenges may have affected his life choices and were part of the factors that led him down a darker path. At some point, he lost a significant amount of money in a chit fund company, which contributed to his problems.
Sharma was known to be a pleasant person and had a friendly personality. People often trusted him because he was a doctor. During this time, he became involved with crime. He started to hire taxis for long rides. He would ask taxi drivers to take him to various destinations.
As he continued with this pattern, he began to change. The trust he built with taxi drivers was used against them. Over time, he was linked to the deaths of many taxi drivers in several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Sharma's actions would eventually lead to his arrest and a life of crime that shocked many.
Devendra Sharma was a serial killer who operated mainly in India between 2002 and 2004. He targeted taxi drivers as victims. He would hire their taxis for longer trips and then lure them to isolated locations. Once there, he and his accomplices would attack the drivers.
Sharma had a methodical approach. He would wait until they reached a secluded place and then beat the taxi drivers severely. After killing them, Sharma would steal their vehicles. The bodies of the victims were often dumped in canals. His crime spree led to the deaths of about twenty men, though he initially confessed to killing between 30 and 40 drivers.
The police arrested Sharma on February 9, 2004. After his arrest, Sharma admitted to the murders during questioning. He was linked to multiple cases across Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
In 2007, a court sentenced Sharma to life in prison for his crimes. However, a year later, he received the death penalty for the murder of a taxi driver named Naresh Verma. This case involved the driver being killed after Sharma hired his taxi. Sharma's actions were driven by his desire to profit from stealing the cars. He faced charges related to the murders over a period of nearly two years.
Sharma was reported to have operated with both planning and support from accomplices. Many of his victims were simply trying to earn a living as taxi drivers. Ultimately, Devendra Sharma used his knowledge as a medical professional for criminal activities, leading to his conviction and heavy sentencing.
