October 15, 2009Desmond Turner was born in 1977. He grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. Much of his childhood was spent in the same neighborhood where he later became involved in serious crime. Desmond's early life had challenges that shaped him. He faced a lot of difficulties while growing up, which impacted his choices as a young adult.
As he grew older, Turner began to get into trouble with the law. His criminal history includes various offenses related to firearms and drugs. Turner had been to prison multiple times before the events that made him infamous. He served about two years in prison after a conviction in 1997 and another two years after a conviction in 2001.
After being released from prison in the fall of 2005, Turner returned to Indianapolis. He tried to adjust to life outside, but his past continued to follow him. His time in prison did not seem to deter him from making poor choices.
By June 2006, just months after his release, Turner had become involved in a violent crime. His life would change forever after those events, but before that, he was just a man trying to navigate the challenges of his past in a familiar place.
On June 1, 2006, Desmond Turner and another suspect entered a home on Hamilton Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. They were aiming to rob the house, believing it contained a large amount of money. During the home invasion, seven family members were shot. The victims included four adults and three children, who were aged 5 to 11.
The police received a 911 call just after 10:00 p.m. and found the bodies inside the home shortly after. All the victims had been shot with assault rifles, and many shell casings were found at the scene. Witnesses reported seeing two suspects leaving the house shortly after the gunfire began.
Turner was well-known to the police, with a long history of criminal activity. Two days after the murders, he surrendered to authorities at a fast-food restaurant. He was arrested and charged with multiple counts of murder.
The other suspect, James Stewart, was arrested the day after the killings. Prosecutors accused Turner of planning the robbery and killing the family members when they confronted him. There was no physical evidence linking him directly to the murders. Witnesses provided testimony that helped to build the case.
In court, Desmond Turner was found guilty on multiple counts, including seven counts of felony murder. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on October 20, 2009. James Stewart also received a lengthy sentence for his role in the crimes.
