May 03, 2006Years Active:
2006Denny O'Dell Taylor Sr. was born in 1945. He grew up in the United States. Not much is known about his childhood or early life. Throughout his adult years, he worked as a businessman. He owned a dump truck company and a truck stop near Interstate 95 in Yulee, Florida.
Denny married Frances Stephens, who was often called Sue, and they had a long marriage that lasted 38 years. The couple had children and created a typical family life. They lived in Yulee, which is a community in Nassau County, Florida.
As years went by, Denny's life began to change. He faced personal issues, including health problems. He had diabetes and suffered from a stroke. These health challenges affected his well-being and contributed to stress in his life.
In the months leading up to his actions in May 2006, Denny and Sue were going through a difficult time. They were having problems in their marriage. Sue filed for divorce, and tensions grew between them. Their issues included accusations of domestic violence. Denny had been arrested for battery after an incident with Sue. Following this, a court ordered him to stay away from her.
By the time of their divorce proceedings, the couple's relationship had soured significantly. Denny was reportedly feeling lonely and unhappy about the end of his marriage. Friends and neighbors described him as someone who was once friendly and involved in the community. However, in the end, the stress and problems in his life took a toll on him.
On May 3, 2006, Denny O'Dell Taylor Sr., 60, shot and killed his ex-wife, Frances Stephens Taylor, and her brother-in-law, Roy E. Rodgers, in a parking lot outside Baptist Medical Center Nassau in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He also wounded Frances's sister, Sara C. Rodgers. The incident occurred around 10:26 a.m. Taylor had been ordered to keep away from his ex-wife and her family due to a history of domestic violence.
After the shooting, Taylor fled the scene in a gold Chrysler and crashed his car at an intersection nearby. Despite the crash, no one else was hurt. He then drove to a parking lot in front of Emma Love Hardee Elementary School, where he shot himself in the head as police arrived.
Frances Taylor was transported to Shands Jacksonville hospital after the shooting but was later pronounced dead. Roy E. Rodgers died at the scene. Sara C. Rodgers was hospitalized in serious condition.
The shooting shocked the local community, especially during a time when the city was preparing for its annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. The elementary school went into lockdown, but no students or staff were injured. School officials managed to ensure that most children were safely picked up by their parents by the end of the day.
