October 1, 1997Dennis L. Miller was born on February 2, 1963, in the United States. Miller was married to Sherry Miller, and they had children together. Their marriage was troubled and involved jealousy, conflict, and prior violence. In 1995, before Sherry was killed, Miller served jail time for holding a gun to her head. While he was in jail, Sherry wrote a letter asking the court to release him early. Miller was released in September 1995.
After his release, problems in the marriage continued. Court records show that Miller was angry and jealous over Sherry’s relationships with other men. On November 18, 1995, Dennis and Sherry went out together after leaving their children with Miller’s mother. They went to a local bar, drank beer, and used methamphetamine.
Miller later claimed that after they returned home, Sherry told him he had to move out because another man was moving in. He said he became enraged and later realized he had stabbed her. After Sherry’s death, Miller fled Pennsylvania. He remained on the run for several months and was later arrested in Florida in May 1996.
On November 18, 1995, Dennis and Sherry Miller left their children with Miller’s mother and went out together. They went to a local bar, where witnesses said they first appeared to be getting along. During the evening, they drank beer and used methamphetamine. Sherry also spoke by phone with Sean Smith, a man she had dated while Miller was in jail.
Dennis and Sherry left the bar around 12:30 a.m. and returned home. The next day, they did not pick up their children and did not attend a planned family brunch. When family members still could not reach them by November 20, police were called.
Officers entered the home and found Sherry Miller dead in the couple’s bedroom. She had been stabbed multiple times and died from internal bleeding.
Miller left a note in the house. Court records described the note as admitting responsibility and showing anger toward Sherry and other people. The court later found that the note, along with the number of stab wounds, supported the murder conviction.
After the killing, Miller fled Pennsylvania. He remained on the run for about five months and was later featured on America’s Most Wanted. He was arrested in Florida in May 1996 and returned to Pennsylvania.
Miller chose a non-jury trial. On October 1, 1997, he was convicted of first-degree murder and related charges. On October 27, 1997, he was sentenced to death.
Miller appealed his conviction and sentence. In 1999, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court upheld the judgment and death sentence. He later filed more appeals, but state post-conviction relief was denied in 2009.
In 2016, a federal court vacated Miller’s rape conviction and death sentence, but his first-degree murder conviction remained in place. Because of that ruling, his current status should be listed as Imprisoned.
