— Dennis Charles Hall
Dennis Charles Hall was born in 1955. By 1990, he was living in Barrow County, Georgia, with his wife and children. Court records show that Hall had a documented history of alcohol abuse and domestic violence before the murder. Police had been called to the Hall home on multiple occasions because of disturbances involving his drinking and violent behavior toward his family.
According to the Georgia Supreme Court, Hall’s alcohol abuse and abusive conduct toward his wife and three children had caused repeated police responses to the home. On one occasion, he reportedly locked his family outside the house. On another, his wife told police that Hall had struck her in the head with a pistol. He had also threatened to shoot his wife and fired a shot into the air. No charges were pursued in those earlier incidents.
On January 7, 1990, Dennis Charles Hall began drinking early in the day. Later that afternoon, he was watching television while his 10-year-old son, Adrian Hall, played with a remote-controlled toy tractor. Hall became angry because he believed the toy was interfering with the television reception. He told Adrian to stop playing with it. When Adrian did not stop immediately, Hall struck him in the head. This led to an argument between Hall and his wife over his treatment of the child.
The situation escalated. Hall obtained a shotgun. His daughters tried to hide the weapon from him, but he found it. Adrian attempted to flee and begged his father not to shoot him. Hall chased the boy down and shot him with the shotgun. After the shooting, Hall made statements minimizing or attempting to justify what he had done. He reportedly told a neighbor, “I couldn’t learn him nothing by beating him with a belt. So I guess I learned him something this time.” Court records also state that he later claimed the shooting was self-defense.
Police arrived at the Hall home the same day and found Adrian dead. Hall was arrested. He was later convicted in Barrow County of murder, two counts of cruelty to children, and discharging a firearm near a public street. In 1990, Hall was sentenced to death for Adrian’s murder. The Georgia Supreme Court affirmed the conviction and death sentence on December 3, 1991. Several justices dissented from parts of the ruling, especially the death sentence.
Years later, Hall’s death sentence was overturned after a court found serious problems with his trial representation. Reports later noted that jurors had not heard evidence that the shotgun was defective and could have discharged accidentally. Hall was ultimately resentenced to life imprisonment.
Dennis Charles Hall was removed from death row and remains classified as an imprisoned offender rather than an executed offender.
