September 22, 1993Demarcus Ali Sears was born in 1971. He spent his early life in Ohio, specifically Cincinnati, where he lived with his family. Details about his childhood and family life are not well-documented. As a young man, he attended school but did not finish. By the time he was eighteen, he had only completed the eleventh grade. It is reported that he had struggles in his personal life, which may have affected his future choices and direction.
As he grew older, Sears' life took a turn that led him away from a typical path. Along with another individual, he found himself in a difficult situation when their car broke down on a trip. This incident eventually led him to be involved in criminal activities. It has been noted that he was trying to return to Ohio when he ended up committing serious offenses in Georgia.
At the time of the events that would later define his life, Sears was living a restless and troubled existence. He had aspirations to make a better life for himself but often found himself in trouble. As he navigated through his young adulthood, he encountered various challenges, including financial difficulties and poor decisions that would culminate in a violent crime.
Demarcus Ali Sears was involved in the kidnapping and murder of Gloria Ann Wilbur on October 7, 1990, in Cobb County, Georgia. Sears and an accomplice, Phillip Williams, attacked Wilbur as she left a Kroger food store. They assaulted her using brass knuckles and forced her into her own car.
After taking control of the vehicle, they drove north. During their journey, they stopped for gas and food. To conceal Wilbur, they covered her with bags in the back seat. While driving through Tennessee, Sears committed sexual assault against Wilbur. As they crossed into Kentucky, Sears forced her into a secluded area and fatally stabbed her.
Wilbur’s body was discovered handcuffed days later, along with evidence linking Sears to the crime. The abandoned vehicle, found nearby, contained blood and hair matching the victim and Sears. Witnesses identified both Sears and Williams at the Waffle House where the crime began.
Following arrests and statements, Sears confessed to his role in the events leading up to Wilbur's death. He was charged with armed robbery, kidnapping with bodily injury, rape, and murder. Sears was convicted and sentenced to death in September 1993. Williams received two life sentences for his involvement.
