murder story

Dr. Darryl Sutorius, a heart surgeon in Cincinnati, was found dead in the basement of his home on February 19, 1996. His death was caused by a gunshot to the head. Initially, the police were uncertain if it was a homicide or suicide. They arrested his wife, Della Sutorius, that same day when they discovered cocaine in the house. She was released on bail but was re-arrested on February 27, after evidence showed she purchased the gun used in the shooting. Gunshot residue tests indicated that she fired the weapon on the day of her husband’s death, leading to the charge of aggravated murder.

Upon investigating, authorities learned that Della Sutorius had a history of violence. Her third husband accused her of making threats against him. After they divorced, she was charged with threatening a boyfriend with a gun. Another husband found knives hidden in their home and reported that she once told him she could kill him. Dr. Sutorius eventually realized that much of what Della had told him about her life was false. She claimed to have graduated from college and owned a daycare, but neither was true. After learning of her lies and violent past, he began divorce proceedings just a week before his death.

During her trial, Della Sutorius chose not to testify in her own defense. Her lawyers argued that the evidence did not prove her guilt and that her rights had been violated during questioning. However, she was convicted on June 7, 1996. The jury took less than five hours to find her guilty of aggravated murder, use of a weapon in a violent crime, and drug possession. Della was sentenced to 23 years to life in prison.

She appealed her conviction in 1997 but was denied. The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department auctioned her jewelry collection to help cover prosecution costs. Della Sutorius died from natural causes at the Franklin Medical Center on November 20, 2010, while serving her life sentence. She was 60 years old at the time of her death and would have been eligible for parole in 2014.
