— Davis Losada
Davis Losada was born on April 28, 1965. By 1984, Losada was living in the San Benito area of Cameron County, Texas. He was 19 years old when Olga Lydia Perales was killed. He was the oldest of the four young men later connected to the crime. The others were Rafael Leyva Jr., Jesus Romero, and Jose Cardenas.
Before the murder, Losada and the others had been drinking beer and smoking marijuana while driving around San Benito. They later went to a party where Olga Perales was present. The group left with her and took her to an isolated area known as La Piedra, where she was sexually assaulted and killed.
After the murder, Rafael Leyva Jr. went to his juvenile probation officer and admitted his involvement in the crime. His statement helped police identify and arrest the others. Losada was arrested on January 13, 1985.
On the night of December 23, 1984, Olga Lydia Perales attended a party in San Benito, Texas. Later that night, Davis Losada, Jose Cardenas, Jesus Romero, and Rafael Leyva Jr. arrived in Cardenas’s car. The group had been driving around, drinking beer, and smoking marijuana before reaching the party.
After leaving the party, the men took Olga to an isolated area near a lake known as La Piedra. She repeatedly asked to be taken home and begged them to leave her alone. Instead, she was sexually assaulted by members of the group.
The attack then became fatal. Olga was beaten with a pipe or table leg and suffered severe head injuries, including a fractured skull. She was also stabbed. Later summaries state that she was struck around the head and body many times and stabbed twice in the chest and abdomen.
After the assault and beating, Olga’s body was dragged into the bushes. The group then left the scene and disposed of items connected to the crime. Her wet clothes were later found in a river or drainage area near the crime scene, and the knife and pipe/table leg used in the attack were found near her body.
Olga’s body was found on December 24, 1984. The investigation eventually focused on Losada and the three others after Rafael Leyva Jr. confessed in early January 1985. In exchange for his testimony against the others, Leyva received a plea agreement on aggravated sexual assault charges.
Losada was arrested on January 13, 1985. His trial began on June 14, 1985. He did not testify in his own defense. On June 19, 1985, the jury convicted him of capital murder and sentenced him to death.
Losada appealed his conviction and sentence several times. One major issue raised later was whether his attorney had a conflict of interest because he had briefly represented Rafael Leyva before being appointed to represent Losada. His appeals were denied, and the death sentence remained in place. Davis Losada was executed by lethal injection in Texas on June 4, 1997.
