— David Rocheville
David Rocheville was born in 1968. He grew up in South Carolina. He had a standard upbringing and attended local schools. In his youth, Rocheville worked as a theater employee, and he eventually became an assistant manager at a movie theater. This job allowed him to learn about the workings of the theater industry.
As he grew older, Rocheville faced various challenges, including some issues related to alcohol. He had a few close friends, including Richard Longworth, with whom he spent time socializing and drinking.
In 1991, Rocheville was 22 years old. During this time, he and Longworth decided to rob a local cinema. The decision they made that evening set off a series of events that would lead to terrible consequences. By this point in his life, Rocheville had no significant criminal record prior to these events.
After the incident at the theater, Rocheville was arrested shortly after. He later faced trial for his actions. His life ended with an execution by lethal injection on December 3, 1999.
In the evening of January 7, 1991, David Rocheville and his friend Richard Longworth went to the WestGate Mall Cinema in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with the intention of robbing the theater. After entering the cinema, Longworth took out his handgun and handed it to Rocheville. They watched a movie for a short while and then moved to the lobby to begin their robbery plan.
As they walked through the hallway, they encountered an usher named Alexander George Hopps, who was 19 years old. Longworth knocked Hopps down and dragged him outside. There, Longworth pinned Hopps against a bar near the air conditioning unit while Rocheville shot him in the head. Afterward, Rocheville returned the gun to Longworth.
Next, Longworth and Rocheville headed back to the front of the theater, only to find the doors locked. They signaled to James Todd Greene, a 24-year-old cinema employee, who opened the door for them. Longworth then pulled out his gun and ordered Greene to open the safe at the ticket booth. After taking several money bags from the safe, they learned from Greene that more bags were waiting in Greene's car.
The two men then forced Greene into their minivan, which was driven by Longworth. Once they were away from the theater, Longworth stopped the minivan, instructed Greene to get out, walk a few steps, kneel down, and face away from them. At that moment, Rocheville shot Greene in the back of the head.
The following day, law enforcement arrested Rocheville and Longworth after Rocheville led them to Greene's body. As the investigation unfolded, Longworth provided detailed information about the crimes they committed. They both faced charges for two counts of murder, one count of kidnapping, and one count of armed robbery. Each was convicted and sentenced to death.
Rocheville admitted to killing Greene but claimed he was forced into it, expressing fear of Longworth. He stated, "Basically, my crime was I was no hero that night." Rocheville was executed by lethal injection on December 3, 1999. His accomplice, Richard Longworth, was executed later on April 15, 2005.
