Murder Story

During a ten-day period from September 20 to September 29, 1976, David Leroy Washington committed a series of violent crimes in Dade County, Florida. Washington and an accomplice murdered three victims: David Pridgen, a minister; Katrina Birk, along with her three elderly sisters-in-law; and Frank Meli, a college student.

The first murder occurred on September 20 when Washington and his accomplice stabbed David Pridgen in a robbery. This crime was followed by the brutal attack on Katrina Birk on September 23. Washington broke into her home, tied her and her sisters-in-law, and stabbed them, which resulted in Birk's death and severe injuries to the others. The final victim, Frank Meli, was kidnapped on September 26. After attempting to extort ransom from Meli's family failed, Washington ultimately killed him on September 29 by stabbing him multiple times.

After committing these crimes, Washington surrendered to the Dade County police on October 1, 1976. Following his arrest, he confessed to all three murders and pleaded guilty. His actions subsequently led to a trial where the prosecutor presented the details of the heinous acts committed, emphasizing the calculated and brutal nature of the crimes.
