— David Allen Sokolowski
David Allen Sokolowski was born in 1957. He spent his early years in North Carolina. Not much is known about his childhood or family background. As he grew older, he became known in the community. He worked various jobs and had a reputation as a construction worker.
By the early 1990s, Sokolowski was living in a rural farmhouse in Orange County, North Carolina. He had a live-in girlfriend named Pamela Owens Ellwood. They lived together for several years and were known to local neighbors. In 1992, Sokolowski and Ellwood had a troubled relationship.
During this time, Sokolowski began to act strangely. He appeared to be involved in a number of disputes with others in the community, but specific details about these conflicts are not widely documented. Sokolowski's behavior raised some eyebrows among neighbors and friends.
In mid-February 1992, Ellwood mysteriously disappeared. Witnesses later indicated that the last confirmed sighting of her was on February 9, 1992. Friends and family began to grow concerned when they had not heard from her for several days.
As concern mounted, Sokolowski reportedly provided conflicting stories about Ellwood’s whereabouts. He told some people that she was visiting her family, while to others, he stated that she had left him. This inconsistency in his accounts became a point of interest as investigators looked into Ellwood's disappearance.
On March 9, 1992, Sokolowski was arrested following a report of suspicious activity at his home. Local law enforcement had received information regarding a homicide, which led them to investigate Sokolowski's property. The following days revealed unsettling discoveries that linked Sokolowski to the case.
David Allen Sokolowski was involved in a series of violent crimes that led to his arrest. In February and March of 1992, he killed two people: his live-in girlfriend, Pamela Owens Ellwood, and his neighbor, Rubel “Little Man” Gray Hill.

The events began with the disappearance of Ellwood. Witnesses testified that they last saw her on February 9, 1992. After that date, her family became concerned when they could not reach her. Sokolowski provided various explanations about Ellwood's whereabouts, saying she was either visiting family or had gone out shopping. However, these statements were inconsistent with the evidence.
On March 9, 1992, law enforcement was alerted to a possible crime happening at Sokolowski's property. When officers arrived, they discovered a bonfire in the backyard where they found charred body parts, identified later as belonging to Hill. Additionally, during their search, they unearthed more evidence in the yard, including two severed ears, and found dismembered body parts of Ellwood inside Sokolowski's home.
Suspicion grew when investigators found bloody clothes linked to Ellwood, with evidence suggesting that her body had been cut up and burned. Sokolowski claimed that he acted in self-defense when he shot Hill. Despite his claims, he faced serious allegations for both murders.
In two separate trials, Sokolowski was convicted of first-degree murder for both killings. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, receiving his first sentence in March 1994 for Hill's murder and a second sentence in October 1994 for Ellwood's murder. His actions and the horrific nature of the crimes shocked the community and drew significant media attention.
