— Daroyce Lamont Mosley
Daroyce Lamont Mosley was born on October 16, 1974, in Texas, during a period marked by increasing violent crime rates in several urban regions across the state. By the early 1990s, Mosley had become associated with older criminal influences, including his uncle, Ray Don Mosley. Ray Don had an established criminal history involving theft-related offenses, trespassing, and interference with law enforcement officers. At the time of the murders, Ray Don Mosley was reportedly on parole. Court records later showed that the relationship between the younger Mosley and his uncle became central to the events that unfolded in July 1994.
Investigators later determined that Mosley participated in planning a robbery targeting Katie’s Lounge, a small establishment located in Kilgore in Gregg County, Texas. The crime appeared financially motivated rather than driven by personal disputes with any of the victims. Prosecutors argued during trial proceedings that Mosley willingly participated in an armed robbery that escalated into a mass shooting.
Prior to the murders, Mosley had no nationally known criminal notoriety. However, the severity of the offense quickly drew statewide attention because four victims were killed in a single incident while another survivor suffered catastrophic injuries. The case later became one of several highly publicized Texas capital punishment cases from the 1990s.
On July 21, 1994, Daroyce Lamont Mosley, his uncle Ray Don Mosley, and accomplice Marcus Smith went to Katie’s Lounge in Kilgore, Texas, to commit a robbery. The lounge was near closing time, and waitress Sandra Cash was preparing to end her shift.
The men entered the lounge wearing ski masks and carrying handguns. Ray Don Mosley went in first and demanded money from Sandra Cash. When she pushed a box of money toward him, he shot her twice. Cash survived, but the shooting left her permanently paralyzed from the chest down.
Four customers were still inside the lounge: Patricia Colter, Duane Colter, Alvin Waller, and Luva Congleton. During the robbery, Daroyce Mosley shot all four customers. Each victim died from gunshot wounds.
Although badly injured, Sandra Cash was able to call 911 after the attackers left. Her call helped police begin the investigation quickly. Authorities soon identified Daroyce Mosley, Ray Don Mosley, and Marcus Smith as suspects. During police questioning, Daroyce Mosley admitted his role in the shootings.
Daroyce Mosley was arrested and charged with capital murder. In 1995, he was convicted and sentenced to death. Ray Don Mosley pleaded guilty to murder and received a life sentence. Marcus Smith received a two-year sentence for his role in the crime.
Mosley’s conviction and death sentence were later upheld during appeals. In 1998, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the case in Mosley v. State. In 2004, a federal court also rejected his habeas appeal in Mosley v. Dretke.
After spending more than ten years on death row, Daroyce Lamont Mosley was executed by lethal injection in Texas on August 28, 2007.
