March 23, 1987Darnell Williams was born on July 31, 1966. He grew up in Indiana. Williams had a difficult childhood. His family life was troubled, leading him to live in foster care at times. He was one of many children in difficult situations.
As a teenager, Williams faced many challenges. He struggled with his identity and place in the world. Despite these difficulties, he completed high school and graduated. He showed potential for a better future with education and support. However, his life took a different direction.
Williams became involved with a group of peers that did not always make good choices. Following his high school graduation, he encountered the law. While his family and friends saw some good qualities in him, he began to make decisions that led him down a darker path.
In November 1985, at the age of 19, Williams was placed in the home of John and Henrietta Rease, who were foster parents. The couple often took in children, providing them shelter and care. Williams lived with them until shortly before their tragic deaths. The Reases were known for their kindness and regularly opened their home to those in need.
On August 12, 1986, John and Henrietta Rease were shot in their home in Lake County, Indiana. They were a couple who cared for foster children. Witnesses reported seeing Gregory Rouster and Darnell Williams enter their house that day.
Witness Derrick Bryant, a foster child living with the Reases at the time, testified that he was hiding in the house. He heard an argument about money owed to Rouster. Bryant then heard gunshots and ran out of the house. Other witnesses confirmed that they saw Rouster and Williams enter with guns and later heard gunfire from inside.
Police found John Rease shot in the shoulder and Henrietta Rease shot in the back and head. Various types of ammunition were discovered at the scene. Williams was arrested the same day and was found with money and ammunition similar to what was found at the Reases' home.
At their trial, both Williams and Rouster were convicted of felony murder for the deaths of John and Henrietta Rease. The prosecution argued that the killings were intentional acts committed during a robbery. In March 1987, both were sentenced to death.
Later, Williams was granted clemency, and Governor Joe Kernan commuted his death sentence to life imprisonment without parole in July 2004. This decision was made partly due to the recognition that Rouster was more culpable and could not be executed.
