1976Daniel Morris Thomas was born in 1948. He grew up in Florida and faced many difficulties in his early life. His family lived in a small two-room house with his mother and nine siblings. They had very little and often struggled to find enough food. This was a challenging time for him.
As a child, Daniel experienced traumatic events that affected him deeply. When he was six years old, he witnessed a violent act when a doctor assaulted his mother. This early exposure to violence likely had lasting effects on him. At the age of eight, he and his younger brother were sent to county jail for missing school.
During his years between eight and thirteen, Daniel was placed in a foster home. The environment was harsh, as he was forced to work long hours in the fields and often faced physical abuse from his foster parents. This tough childhood affected his behavior and mental health.
At the age of fifteen, Daniel was sent to a reformatory school, where he faced more challenges. He ran away from this facility with a friend, but tragedy struck when his friend drowned during an incident involving law enforcement.
On January 1, 1976, Daniel Morris Thomas entered the home of Charles Anderson in Polk County, Florida. He was armed with a rifle and wore a ski mask. In a violent act, he shot and killed Charles Anderson. While Charles was dying, Thomas assaulted his wife. He also killed the family's dog before fleeing the scene with stolen items.
Thomas was arrested later that year. On December 21, 1976, he faced charges for first-degree murder, sexual battery, robbery, and burglary related to the incident at the Anderson home. Evidence presented during the trial included testimony from law enforcement and a paid informant. They stated that shortly after the murder, Thomas was seen selling firearms, some of which had been stolen from the Anderson home. A search of Thomas's home revealed the murder weapon, ski masks, and other stolen goods.
The jury found Thomas guilty on all counts, and the court sentenced him to death on April 15, 1977. This decision was confirmed by the Florida Supreme Court. Thomas's attempts to appeal his conviction and sentence were unsuccessful. He raised multiple claims about the effectiveness of his legal representation and the fairness of his sentencing process, but these claims were denied.
After several years in prison, Thomas was executed by electrocution on April 15, 1986, in Florida.
