March 18, 1997Daniel Earl Reneau was born on April 15, 1975, in Jacksonville, Florida. His father was in the Army, and the family moved to various locations due to his father's military service. When Daniel was a child, they settled in Kansas, near Fort Riley.
Growing up, Daniel had a typical upbringing. However, he faced challenges during his teenage years. He attended school but dropped out in the 12th grade. After leaving school, he began working various construction jobs in Texas to support himself. Daniel started living independently at the age of 16.
As he grew older, Daniel developed a pattern of involvement with crime. Evidence from his later trial indicated that he was connected to several burglaries in the Kerr County area. His relationships with other individuals involved in criminal activities, particularly with Jeffrey Wood, shaped his early adult life.
During this time, he faced a lack of stable influences, and his older friends introduced him to a life that included illegal activities. Despite his criminal behavior, Daniel had no prior felony convictions at the time of his most infamous crime.
In December 1995, he and Jeffrey Wood planned a robbery at a gas station in Kerrville, Texas. This plan failed to involve other individuals they attempted to recruit, which set the stage for the violent events that followed.
In December 1995, Daniel Earl Reneau and Jeffrey Wood made plans to rob a gas station in Kerrville, Texas. They tried to get two employees to help, but the employees refused. Despite this, Reneau and Wood decided to go ahead with the robbery.
On January 2, 1996, at around 6:00 a.m., Reneau entered the gas station armed with a .22 caliber handgun. He pointed the gun at Kris Keeran, the clerk, and ordered him to a back room. When Keeran did not move quickly enough, Reneau fired a shot that struck Keeran in the face. Keeran died almost instantly.
After the shooting, Reneau did not check on Keeran and proceeded with the robbery. Wood joined Reneau inside the store, and together they stole a safe, a cash box, and a VCR that contained the store's surveillance tape. The items they stole amounted to over $11,000 in cash and checks.
Both men were arrested within 24 hours of the crime. They confessed to the robbery and murder during their questioning with the police. The murder weapon was recovered, and they were linked to several previous burglaries.
Reneau was tried and found guilty of capital murder in March 1997, receiving a death sentence. He was executed by lethal injection on June 13, 2002.
