— Daniel E. Wilson
Daniel E. Wilson was born on September 10, 1969, in Ohio. Growing up, he faced a challenging childhood. Wilson's father was an alcoholic who was reportedly abusive toward his wife and children. The atmosphere in the household was chaotic, filled with violence and neglect. Wilson's mother eventually left his father, taking one son with her while leaving Daniel and his younger brother with their father.
As a child, Wilson often went without basic necessities like food, leading him and his brother to steal from neighbors to survive. By the time he was fourteen, Wilson had a significant run-in with the law when he broke into an elderly neighbor's home. During the struggle, he caused the elderly man to fall and break his hip. This incident resulted in Wilson being placed in a juvenile facility for involuntary manslaughter.
After serving time, Wilson was placed in a halfway house and later settled into a foster home with Shirley Spinney. He did well academically, graduating high school with decent grades and later attending college for a short time. However, he struggled with alcohol abuse throughout his youth. In 1988, the tragic death of his foster brother, Mark, deeply affected him and caused him to drink more heavily.
By his late teens, Wilson's life continued to spiral as he moved in and out of different living situations, including with friends and family. Despite showing some promise and potential, the impact of his troubled upbringing and increasing alcohol dependency set the stage for his later criminal actions.
On May 4, 1991, in Lorain County, Ohio, Daniel E. Wilson killed 24-year-old Carol Lutz. The events leading to her death began when Lutz offered Wilson a ride home from a bar. After they arrived at his home, Wilson locked Lutz in the trunk of her car. He then drove around for hours, with Lutz trapped inside.
At some point, Wilson let Lutz out briefly so she could use the restroom but forced her back into the trunk despite her pleas. Later, feeling desperate about the situation, he punctured the gas tank of her car, stuffed a rag into it, and set it on fire. Wilson walked away while the car burned with Lutz inside.
The police arrested Wilson five days later. He confessed to the murder, stating that he had been drinking heavily and couldn't remember all the details. During his confession, he mentioned that he didn't believe Lutz would forget about being locked in the trunk if he let her go, which is why he felt he had to act.
Wilson was convicted of aggravated murder, kidnapping, and aggravated arson. He was sentenced to death in 1992 and was executed by lethal injection on June 3, 2009. His final words were an apology to the Lutz family and an expression of faith.
