Bio

Cory Johnson was born on November 5, 1968. Federal court records described him as being from New York City before becoming involved in a drug-trafficking network that later expanded into Richmond, Virginia. The organization operated during the late 1980s and early 1990s and was connected to the distribution of crack cocaine.

Johnson, Richard Tipton, and James H. Roane Jr. were described in court as major participants in the drug operation. The conspiracy originally had connections in Trenton, New Jersey, before expanding into Richmond in 1990. By late 1991, the group had moved deeper into Richmond neighborhoods, including Central Gardens and Newtowne.

The group obtained cocaine from suppliers, converted it into crack cocaine, and distributed it through street-level sellers. Court records stated that the organization used violence to protect its drug trade, punish suspected disloyalty, and remove competitors. Johnson later became one of the central defendants in a federal capital prosecution tied to the operation.

Murder Story

Cory Johnson’s confirmed murder convictions came from a series of killings in Richmond, Virginia, in early 1992. Prosecutors said the killings were connected to the drug-trafficking conspiracy and were carried out against rivals, suspected informants, or people accused of interfering with the group’s business.

On January 14, 1992, Johnson was involved in the killing of Peyton Johnson, a rival drug dealer. Court records stated that after James Roane located Peyton Johnson at a tavern, Cory Johnson entered the tavern with another person and fatally shot him with a semiautomatic weapon.

On January 29, 1992, Louis Johnson was killed. Prosecutors said Louis had been viewed as a threat because of his connection to a rival dealer. Roane first approached and shot him. Cory Johnson and Lance Thomas then got out of Roane’s vehicle and also fired at Louis Johnson. As Louis lay on the ground, either Cory Johnson or Thomas fired close-range shots. Louis Johnson died from the gunshot wounds.

On February 1, 1992, Johnson carried out a triple killing at the home of Bobby Long. Dorothy Armstrong had reportedly been threatened by Johnson over an unpaid drug debt and had gone to stay with her brother, Bobby Long. Johnson learned where Long lived, went there with others, and approached the front door. When Long opened the door, Johnson opened fire. Dorothy Armstrong and Anthony Carter were killed inside the home. Bobby Long ran outside but was shot and killed in the front yard.

On February 19, 1992, Johnson targeted Linwood Chiles because he suspected Chiles was cooperating with police. Johnson arranged to meet with Chiles and later rode with Chiles, Curtis Thorne, and sisters Priscilla and Gwen Greene. After the vehicle stopped in an alley, Johnson ordered Chiles to place his head on the steering wheel and shot him twice at close range. More shots were fired, killing Curtis Thorne and seriously wounding both Greene sisters. Court records stated that Thorne was struck by bullets fired from two different directions.

Johnson was tried in federal court along with Richard Tipton and James Roane. In February 1993, a jury convicted Johnson of all seven capital murders charged against him: Peyton Johnson, Louis Johnson, Bobby Long, Dorothy Armstrong, Anthony Carter, Linwood Chiles, and Curtis Thorne. He was also convicted of drug conspiracy, engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, violence in aid of racketeering, firearm offenses, and drug possession charges.

After the penalty phase, the jury recommended that Johnson receive a death sentence for each of the seven murders. The federal court formally sentenced him to death and also imposed prison terms for the non-capital crimes.

Johnson spent many years on federal death row while his attorneys pursued appeals. His legal team later argued that he had intellectual disability and should not be executed. Those claims did not stop the execution.

Cory Johnson was executed by lethal injection at the federal prison complex in Terre Haute, Indiana, on January 14, 2021. He was pronounced dead at 11:34 p.m. He was 52 years old.
