Bio

Colton Aaron Pitonyak was born in 1982 and grew up in Bryant, Arkansas, a suburb of Little Rock. He was a bright student and attended Catholic schools during his education. He graduated from Catholic High School for Boys in Little Rock, where he was recognized as a National Merit Scholar. In 2000, he was one of seven senior finalists at his school and one of 166 in the state. His academic success earned him a scholarship to the University of Texas at Austin, where he pursued a finance degree.

While at college, Colton was involved in various activities. He joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, which was known for its social events and brotherhood. Pitonyak was seen as a promising student with a bright future ahead of him. However, his life began to change as he struggled with substance abuse. He had entered a rehabilitation program for drugs at one point. In 2004, police found illegal drugs in his apartment, including cocaine and prescription medications he had obtained unlawfully. He was arrested for possession of these illegal substances.

Throughout his life, Colton was recognized for his intelligence and good grades. His teachers and friends acknowledged him as a top performer in his studies. However, as he became involved with drugs, he started to change. Friends noticed a shift in his personality, describing him as more solemn and reserved compared to the bright, outgoing student they had known.

Murder Story

On August 16, 2005, Colton Pitonyak and Jennifer Cave went out to celebrate Cave's new job. They went to dinner in Austin, Texas. After their time together, Jennifer was found dead the next day.

Jennifer Cave, 21, had faced personal struggles with drugs and had left college. According to her mother, she was still trying to find direction in life. But the day before she was killed, things appeared to be changing—she had just been hired as a legal assistant at an environmental law firm. Her employer said she impressed the office immediately with her enthusiasm and organization, and after only four hours, she was offered a full-time position.

Jennifer's body was discovered in Pitonyak's apartment in Austin. She had been shot and her body was partially dismembered. A hacksaw was found placed on her abdomen, and there were multiple stab wounds on her body. Toxicology reports showed that Jennifer had alcohol, marijuana, and methamphetamines in her system at the time of her death.

The studio apartment was in disarray and Sedwick immediately smelled a bad odor. In the bathroom, he discovered Cave's partially dismembered body in the tub.

On August 18, Jennifer's family became concerned when she did not show up for work. They found her car outside Pitonyak's apartment. When law enforcement arrived, they could not search the apartment without a warrant. After the police left, her stepfather broke into Pitonyak's apartment and found Jennifer's body.

Jennifer Cave’s severed head and hands were found wrapped in trash bags. An autopsy showed she died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, with additional injuries inflicted after death.

After the murder, Colton Pitonyak and his ex-girlfriend, Laura Hall, fled to Mexico. They crossed the border and were later found in a Holiday Inn in Piedras Negras, Mexico, on August 23, 2005. Mexican authorities turned them over to U.S. Marshals, who arrested Pitonyak.

Pitonyak also bought heavy-duty trash bags, odor eliminator, carpet cleaner, gloves, and face masks.

Pitonyak was charged with murder on the same day he was found. He was convicted on January 29, 2007. The jury sentenced him to 55 years in prison. He was 24 years old at the time of sentencing and would be eligible for parole at age 51. Laura Hall, who helped Pitonyak after the murder, was arrested later and faced charges for tampering with evidence and hindering his apprehension. The trial and its aftermath received considerable media attention.
