— Clyde Smith Jr.
Clyde Smith Jr. was born on August 31, 1973, in Charlotte, North Carolina. He grew up in a challenging environment. His family life was marked by conflict and instability. Clyde had four brothers and a sister. His mother had a difficult relationship with several men, some of whom were abusive. These circumstances led to a troubled childhood for Clyde.
Clyde dropped out of school in the ninth grade while living in Laurel, Mississippi. His education ended after just nine years, and he struggled to find steady work. At one point, he worked as a security guard, but it was not a long-term solution. He ran away from home at the age of 15 and spent time on the streets, leading a life that was far from stable.
Clyde later moved back to Houston, Texas, where he had lived until he was nine years old. His father lived in Houston, but their relationship was strained. Clyde's mother had warned him that returning to Texas was dangerous, saying, "there ain't nothing left in Texas but death." Shortly after moving, he faced rejection from his father, which compounded the difficulties in his life.
By the time he was an adult, Clyde had developed a deep sense of disconnection from his family. He had not seen relatives in years and had a daughter with whom he had lost contact.
On February 7, 1992, David Jacobs was murdered in Houston, Texas. His body was discovered in his cab at a parking lot of an apartment complex. An autopsy determined that he had been shot three times in the back of the neck with a .38 caliber firearm. This murder was part of a robbery.
About six weeks later, on March 22, 1992, another cab driver, Victor Bilton, was shot and killed during a similar robbery. Both murders were connected by the same .38 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun. Ballistic tests confirmed that the firearm found in Smith's possession was linked to both shootings.
Clyde Smith Jr. was arrested on April 5, 1992, after he accidentally shot himself in the leg at an apartment complex. During the police investigation, Smith confessed to the murders of both Jacobs and Bilton. This confession was supported by witness testimonies from his girlfriends, one of whom had reported him to a crime tip line.
Smith was charged with capital murder in the death of David Jacobs and later convicted. In late 1993, he was sentenced to death. His appeals went through various state and federal courts, but Smith's claims were ultimately denied.
On February 15, 2006, Clyde Smith Jr. was executed by lethal injection in Texas. He stated his final words of gratitude to his friends present during his execution, but he did not acknowledge the victims' families who were also there. Seven minutes after the lethal drugs were administered, he was pronounced dead.
