2003Chen Yongfeng was born in 1983 in Qingtian County, Zhejiang Province, China. He grew up in a rural area and had a humble upbringing. After completing elementary school, Chen dropped out and did not pursue further education. Instead, he sought work in various low-paying jobs, including fluffing cotton for four years.
In search of better opportunities, Chen moved to Wenzhou City in early 2003. He started working as a garbage collector and engaged in scavenging to collect scrap materials. This job involved searching through trash for items that could be reused or resold. While scavenging, Chen met other scrap merchants and developed connections within this community.
During his time in Wenzhou, Chen faced financial struggles. He was frustrated by his circumstances and grew resentful of others who seemed to be doing better financially. The pressure to make money became significant for him.
The motivations behind Chen's actions stemmed from his experiences and struggles in life. He became increasingly disillusioned and sought ways to improve his situation, ultimately leading him down a dark path.
Chen Yongfeng committed a series of murders between late February and May 2003. He targeted scrap merchants, luring them from their workplaces to his temporary home. Once there, he killed them. The exact details of how he carried out the murders remain unclear.
After killing his victims, he dismembered their bodies into smaller pieces. He then disposed of these parts in various locations throughout Wenzhou city, including throwing them into a river. In total, police collected 229 body parts from multiple dump sites. They filled 29 bags with the remains.
Chen Yongfeng stole money from his victims, amounting to 10,032 yuan. He was arrested on May 24, 2003, after committing ten murders. On December 5, he received a death sentence for his crimes. During his trial, he denied committing the murders but admitted to much of the evidence against him. His lawyer claimed that Chen might have had a mental illness due to the nature of the killings, but prosecutors argued that he was sane and skilled at avoiding questions.
