murder story
Charles Victor Thompson was convicted of the capital murders of Dennise Hayslip and Darren Cain on April 30, 1998. He shot both victims in Harris County, Texas. Thompson had a confrontation with Hayslip and Cain, which escalated into violence. He returned to Hayslip’s apartment after being removed by police the previous night. Thompson kicked in the door and opened fire, killing Cain and critically injuring Hayslip. Hayslip later died from her injuries.
Thompson was sentenced to death on May 5, 1999. His sentence was initially overturned due to a violation of his right to counsel during the trial, leading to a retrial. He was sentenced to death again on October 28, 2005.
In 2005, after a re-sentencing hearing, Thompson escaped from Harris County Jail. He used a forged ID badge claiming to be from the Attorney General's office. After four days, he was recaptured in Shreveport, Louisiana, while he was drunk and making calls on a pay phone. During his time on the run, he managed to acquire food and clothing by posing as a Hurricane Katrina evacuee, receiving assistance from Good Samaritans.
Currently, Thompson remains on death row at the Polunsky Unit in Texas. He is appealing his conviction, arguing there was not enough evidence to justify the conviction due to complications from medical care related to Hayslip's death.
