— Charles Daniel Thacker
Charles Daniel Thacker was born on September 18, 1968, in Lorain County, Ohio. He grew up in a family that struggled financially. Thacker was the youngest of four children in his family. While growing up, he faced various challenges.
In his early life, Thacker had trouble staying out of legal trouble. By the time he was a teenager, he had started to commit crimes. In 1985, at the age of 17, he began to babysit a five-year-old girl and sexually molested her during this time. This marked the start of a troubling pattern that would continue into his adulthood.
Thacker’s criminal behavior escalated in the late 1980s. In separate incidents in 1987, he assaulted and robbed two women. He was also convicted of sexual assault and was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 1988. He began serving this sentence in October of that year. Thacker was paroled in July 1992 after serving less than four years.
Following his release, Thacker's criminal activities did not stop. In the months leading up to his fatal crime, he sexually assaulted two more women in early 1993. Thacker's behavior reflected a concerning trend of violence against women that would eventually lead to his most serious crime.
Thacker’s life would take a tragic turn on April 7, 1993, when he committed a crime that would lead to his arrest the following day. His earlier life experiences and early criminal background would play significant roles in the events that unfolded later.
On the evening of April 7, 1993, Charles Daniel Thacker attacked Karen Gail Crawford at her apartment complex in Harris County, Texas. Karen was a 26-year-old second-grade teacher. That night, she was returning home after shopping for dog food. As she stopped to collect her mail, an assailant suddenly grabbed her and dragged her into a nearby women's restroom.
A maintenance worker noticed a key dangling from Karen's mailbox, which caused him concern. He checked her apartment but received no answer. He then saw her car parked nearby with her dog inside and noticed a locked restroom. After knocking on the door, he heard a man's voice from within. The situation escalated, and when the restroom door opened, Thacker emerged. A struggle ensued. The maintenance worker attempted to detain Thacker, but Thacker sprayed him with mace and fled the scene.
Meanwhile, Karen was discovered face down inside the restroom, unconscious. Efforts to revive her were made, but she was ultimately declared brain dead a few days later. An autopsy concluded that her death was caused by strangulation, with evidence indicating a probable choke hold or "hammerlock" was used.
The following day, police used tracking dogs to find Thacker hiding in a nearby yard. Witnesses identified him, noting that they had seen him loitering around the area shortly before the attack. Thacker's truck was also located at the apartment complex, containing his identification.
In the trial, several witnesses testified against Thacker, and he was identified by multiple individuals who saw him fleeing the scene. A pubic hair matching Karen was found in Thacker's underwear, further linking him to the crime.
Thacker was arrested and later charged with capital murder. He was convicted on May 4, 1994, and sentenced to death. After numerous legal challenges and appeals, he was executed by lethal injection on November 9, 2005. In his final words, he expressed love for his family and stated he was sorry for his actions.
