Bio

Chan Ka-Chun was born in 1972. By the mid-1990s, Chan became involved with accomplices Chan Ki-nang and Leung Sze-lai. Their crimes targeted women described in reports as hostesses. The pattern involved robbery, sexual violence, and murder.

The case came to police attention after the surviving victim, Kwok Yin, reported that she had been raped and robbed in January 1997. Police arrested Leung Sze-lai on March 1, 1997, and Leung implicated Chan Ka-Chun. Chan was arrested later the same day.

After his arrest, Chan gave information that led police to the bodies of two victims. The information he provided in police interviews amounted to a full confession to the offenses charged.

Murder Story

Chan Ka-Chun’s confirmed crimes took place between 1996 and 1997 in Hong Kong. The first murder involved Cheung Wah-mei, age 29. Prosecutors said Chan Ka-Chun and Chan Ki-nang conspired to rob her around June 1996 and then killed her. Court records referred to this as the Cheung Chau burial case.

The second murder involved Tam Ngan-hang, age 23. Prosecutors said Chan Ka-Chun and Chan Ki-nang conspired to rob her in August 1996 and then murdered her. Later reporting stated that both Cheung and Tam were suffocated with a pillow. Tam’s body was found floating in a bag at Chi Ma Wan in August 1996.

The third murder involved Yu Wai-man, age 24. Prosecutors said Chan Ka-Chun and Leung Sze-lai conspired to rob her on February 17, 1997 near the Shatin Shing Mun River area. Yu resisted more strongly than the other victims and was stabbed to death.

The investigation expanded after Kwok Yin, a surviving victim, reported that she had been raped and robbed in Cheung Chau on January 21, 1997. Police arrested Leung Sze-lai on March 1, 1997. During questioning, Leung implicated Chan Ka-Chun, who was arrested that same afternoon.

Chan was later tried with Chan Ki-nang. The amended indictment contained multiple counts, including conspiracy to commit robbery, murder, conspiracy to murder, and rape. Chan Ka-Chun was convicted by unanimous jury verdicts on all counts. He received life imprisonment for the murders, while the other prison terms ranged from 8 to 18 years and totaled 26 years, to run concurrently with the life sentence.

His accomplice Chan Ki-nang received two life sentences for murdering two of the women. Leung Sze-lai received 12 years after pleading guilty to offenses including rape, conspiracy to rob, and manslaughter in one of the cases.
