November 30, 2015Carol Coronado was born in 1984.
After high school, she joined the U.S. Army. She served only a few months and was released for medical reasons after an injury.
She became a stay-at-home mother and had three daughters: Sophia, about 2½ in 2014; Yazmine, about 16 months; and Xenia, about 2 months. Her husband was named Rudy Coronado. Her father-in-law said she was trying to go to school while caring for the children. Her Facebook page included photos of the girls and an ultrasound image.
Her mother’s name was Julie Piercey.
On May 20, 2014, three young girls died at a home in Torrance, Los Angeles County, California. The girls were Sophia, 2 1/2 years old; Yazmine, 16 months; and Xenia, 2 months.
Investigators said the girls had stab wounds and that multiple knives were recovered from the scene. Sheriff's officials said the bodies were placed on a bed.
The children's mother, Carol Coronado, 30, was found on the bed next to the girls. She was described by authorities as covered with blood and was holding a knife.
Carol Coronado had self-inflicted stab and slice wounds. She was taken to a hospital for treatment and later booked on suspicion of murder.
Coronado also was charged with one count of attempted murder for allegedly trying to kill her own mother. Authorities said the grandmother found the scene and wrestled a knife away from Coronado.
Neighbors and family members reported loud screams and a chaotic scene. The girls' father was working on a vehicle across the street when he learned what had happened.
Prosecutors filed three counts of murder and added special allegations for multiple murders and use of a deadly weapon. The district attorney later said it would decide whether to seek the death penalty.
Family members and the community held a vigil for the three girls. Supporters said they were raising awareness about postpartum mental health and the family set up the Coronado Angel Fund.
Carol Coronado was born in 1984. She remains in custody pending trial.
