1991Carl Stephen Moseley was born on October 22, 1965, in the United States.
Carl Stephen Moseley was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1991 murders of Dorothy Louise Woods Johnson and Deborah Jane Henley in North Carolina. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction later confirmed that he had been convicted and sentenced to death in Forsyth and Stokes counties for both killings.
The first murder occurred after Dorothy Louise Woods Johnson went to the SRO, a country-western dance club in Winston-Salem, on April 12, 1991. Court records state that Moseley was also at the club that night and that he and Johnson talked and danced together. Johnson was last seen alive at the club. Her body was found the next day, April 13, 1991, near a secluded cul-de-sac in a rural area of Stokes County. She had been beaten, cut, sexually assaulted, raped, and strangled. Moseley was later convicted of first-degree murder, first-degree sexual assault, and first-degree rape in that case.
The second murder involved Deborah Jane Henley. On July 25, 1991, Henley met Moseley at the same SRO dance club in Winston-Salem. After the club closed, Moseley offered to drive her home. Witness testimony showed that they left the club together at about 1:30 a.m., and Moseley was next seen about 2:45 a.m. Henley’s body was later found partly hidden in a field around five miles from the club. She had been beaten, stabbed, sexually assaulted with a blunt object, and manually strangled.
Moseley was tried for Henley’s murder and found guilty of first-degree murder. After a sentencing hearing, the jury recommended the death penalty, and the court imposed that sentence. He was also sentenced to death in the Johnson case, with additional life sentences for first-degree sexual assault and first-degree rape.
The North Carolina Supreme Court reviewed the cases on appeal and upheld the death sentences. In its review of the Johnson case, the court noted that the jury found multiple aggravating circumstances, including that the murder occurred during first-degree rape and first-degree sexual offense, that it was especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel, and that it was part of a course of violent conduct involving other crimes.
Moseley remained on North Carolina death row for decades. He was not executed. On February 17, 2022, he died of natural causes at the Central Prison Healthcare Complex in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was 56 years old.
