Krishna Maharaj was born on January 26, 1939, in Trinidad, a country that was under British rule at that time. Because of this, he held British nationality. His family roots go deep into the culture of Trinidad. In 1960, at the age of 21, he moved to the United Kingdom. There, he worked hard and built a life for himself. He started his career driving trucks and then transitioned into a successful business importing fruits. He even became a well-known racehorse owner in the UK.
Maharaj's business allowed him to become a millionaire, and he owned a number of racehorses. One of his horses even won a race at Royal Ascot in 1974. However, life took a different turn when, in 1985, he moved to Florida for new business opportunities.
While in Florida, Maharaj became involved in business dealings with Derrick Moo Young and his son, Duane Young. He was not satisfied with how they managed his affairs. The dissatisfaction escalated to the point where he filed a civil lawsuit against them. This legal battle likely contributed to the tension between them.
In 1986, Maharaj was living in Miami. He faced challenges with his investments, and the business climate in Florida was difficult for him. The situation worsened to a point where he lost his wealth and became penniless. Despite his struggles, he continued to hold onto his belief in the potential of his businesses.
Maharaj's life took a drastic turn on October 16, 1986, when the young men, Moo Young and his son, were shot in their hotel room. This incident would lead to his arrest and conviction the following year. Throughout his time in prison, he has maintained his innocence, claiming that he was not present during the murders.
On October 16, 1986, Krishna Maharaj arranged a meeting with Derrick Moo Young at the DuPont Plaza Hotel in Miami, Florida. Moo Young arrived at room 1215 with his son, Duane Young. During the meeting, Maharaj is said to have appeared from behind a door holding a gun. An argument broke out between Maharaj and Derrick Moo Young, during which Derrick was shot and killed.
Following this incident, it is alleged that Maharaj took Duane Young to another location within the hotel suite and shot him as well. Once the shootings occurred, Maharaj was arrested on the same day.
Maharaj was charged with the murders and went to trial in 1987. The jury found him guilty of both murders, and he received the death penalty for the murder of Duane Young and a life sentence for the murder of Derrick Moo Young.
Over the years, the case raised several questions about the fairness of the trial. Witnesses placed Maharaj 30 miles away from the crime scene at the time of the murders, but these witnesses were not called to testify during the trial.
In 2002, after spending 15 years on death row, Maharaj's death sentence was commuted to life imprisonment due to irregularities in his trial. Various appeals and attempts for a retrial followed, but Maharaj maintained that he did not commit the murders and emphasized that the case against him was flawed.
