Bio

Brandon David McInerney was born on January 24, 1994, in Ventura, California, United States. His mother had a history of methamphetamine addiction, while his father had prior legal issues related to domestic violence.

During his childhood, concerns about his living conditions led to repeated involvement from child welfare authorities. In 2004, custody arrangements changed, and McInerney was placed under his father’s care after his mother entered a drug rehabilitation program.

As a teenager, he attended E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California. Reports indicate that he had exposure to violence and behavioral issues during his upbringing. He was also known among peers to have an interest in martial arts and had been involved in conflicts within his social environment.

In the period leading up to February 2008, McInerney and fellow student Lawrence King had multiple verbal disagreements at school. These interactions were described in court proceedings as ongoing tensions between the two students.

At the time of the incident, McInerney was 14 years old and enrolled as a student at E.O. Green Junior High School.

Murder Story

On the morning of February 12, 2008, Brandon David McInerney entered a classroom at E.O. Green Junior High School in Oxnard, California. The victim, Lawrence King, aged 15, was seated in a computer laboratory along with other students.

At approximately 8:15 a.m., McInerney produced a .22-caliber revolver from his backpack and approached King from behind. He fired two shots at close range, striking King in the back of the head. The attack occurred in the presence of classmates.

After the shooting, McInerney placed the weapon down and exited the classroom. He left the school campus and was apprehended by police within minutes, approximately five blocks away. He was arrested the same day.

King was transported to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition. He was declared brain dead on February 13, 2008, and was kept on life support briefly before being pronounced dead.

The case proceeded through extensive legal proceedings, including multiple delays and pretrial hearings. In 2008, a court ruled that McInerney would be tried as an adult. His first trial began on July 5, 2011, in Los Angeles County following a change of venue. After several weeks of testimony, the jury was unable to reach a unanimous decision, and a mistrial was declared on September 1, 2011.

Prosecutors prepared for a second trial but later withdrew certain charges, including a hate crime allegation. On November 21, 2011, McInerney entered a guilty plea to second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and use of a firearm. The plea agreement resulted in a fixed sentence of 21 years imprisonment and avoided a retrial.

He was formally sentenced on December 19, 2011. Under the terms of the sentence, he would serve time initially in a juvenile facility before transfer to the adult prison system upon reaching adulthood.

The case received widespread national and international attention and was cited in discussions related to school safety, youth violence, and legal handling of juvenile offenders.
