1995Braeden Benjamin Nugent was born in 1975. He grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. As a teenager, Nugent became involved in crime. He was known to be associated with other young people who were also involved in illegal activities. By the time he was in his late teens, he had started to commit robberies.
In 1995, Nugent was 19 years old. He committed two serious crimes that would change his life forever. These crimes were the serious assaults and murders of two men. He was arrested later that year, in December, after the police connected him to these incidents.
Nugent's actions created fear in his community. The trial that followed his arrest revealed how violent he had been. In January 1997, he was sentenced to life in prison for his crimes. He would spend many years behind bars, facing the consequences of his actions.
He was also noted for having difficulties while in prison. On March 27, 2005, Nugent died at the age of 29 from a drug overdose while serving his sentence.
On March 31, 1995, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Braeden Benjamin Nugent, then 19 years old, and another young man attacked Jean Joseph Boutin, who was 44. They assaulted him near Hillcrest Park. After beating Boutin, they stole his jewelry and wallet. When they returned, they found Boutin still alive but injured. Nugent kicked Boutin in the face and followed with several kicks to his head, leaving Boutin unconscious. Later, they bound him and attacked him again. The following day, Boutin's body was discovered by a woman walking her dog. The cause of death was identified as asphyxia due to blood in the airway.
On May 16, 1995, Nugent attacked Victor Wilson, who was 41 years old. Wilson was found in a driveway on Ambrose Street, where he had been brutally choked and beaten. The injuries Wilson suffered were so severe that he was nearly unrecognizable.
Nugent was arrested in December 1995. He pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder. In addition to murder, he faced charges of aggravated assault, robbery, and arson related to other incidents. In January 1997, he was sentenced to double life imprisonment.
Nugent died on March 27, 2005, at the age of 29 in Collins Bay Institution, a medium-security prison. His death resulted from a drug overdose, with high levels of prescription medication found in his system. An investigation revealed no signs of foul play, and the case was closed.
