Brad Keith Sigmon was born on November 12, 1957, in South Carolina. He was the oldest of five children in his family. His mother, Virginia Wooten, was only 17 years old when she had him. She later had four more children, each one year apart. Sigmon’s father, Ronnie Sigmon, served in the U.S. military, which meant the family moved often. They even lived in the Philippines for some time after the youngest sibling was born.
When Sigmon was young, his parents divorced. This was a challenging time for his mother, who had to adapt to life as a young single mother while managing the difficulties of military life. Ronnie Sigmon struggled with alcoholism and was known to abuse Virginia. Although he did not hurt his younger children, he physically abused Sigmon. As the oldest, Sigmon often tried to protect his mother from his father's violence. Later, Sigmon's parents remarried, leading to more instability as he moved between his parents and stepparents.
Despite these challenges, Sigmon had what was described as a normal childhood. As a teenager, he started working at the age of 16 while he was still in high school. This was to help his family financially, as he took on the responsibility of caring for his younger siblings after the divorce. However, he dropped out of high school just nine weeks before graduation at the age of 19 to get married. He later had one son.
murder story
On April 27, 2001, Brad Sigmon committed a double murder in South Carolina. He murdered David and Gladys Larke, who were the elderly parents of his ex-girlfriend. Sigmon had been struggling with a breakup and developed an obsession with his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Barbare.
On the night before the murders, Sigmon and his friend Eugene Strube drank alcohol and used cocaine. He told Strube about his plan to go to the Larkes' house the next day. Sigmon hoped to confront Barbare, who had moved back in with her parents. When the morning came, Sigmon entered the Larkes' home. He found David in the kitchen and Gladys in the living room. Armed with a baseball bat, he attacked them, beating both of them multiple times.
After killing the Larkes, Sigmon stole David's gun and waited for Barbare to return home. When she arrived, he forced her into a car at gunpoint. His original plan was to drive her to North Carolina. However, Barbare managed to escape by jumping out of the car, and Sigmon shot at her as she ran away. She survived and received medical treatment.
Following the events, a manhunt ensued. Sigmon was captured 11 days later in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Upon his return to South Carolina, he faced multiple charges, including murder and kidnapping. Sigmon was later tried and found guilty of the murders and sentenced to death.
His appeals against the death penalty were ultimately denied. As of 2024, Sigmon remains on death row, waiting for execution.
