— Bobby Wayne Woods
Bobby Wayne Woods was born on October 11, 1965. He grew up in Tarrant County, Texas. Little is known about his childhood and family life. He had a close relationship with his grandmother, whom he referred to as "Mom." Bobby had a mother named Doris.
Not much is documented about his early education or schooling, except that he reportedly had limited education, with only seven years completed.
Woods had various jobs throughout his life, including working as a short order cook. His work history before his arrest is not fully clear. There is no information indicating that he had a prior criminal record before his later offenses.
In the years leading up to his arrest, Woods was in a relationship with Schwana Patterson, the mother of two children, Sarah and Cody. This relationship eventually ended, and Woods was reportedly asked to leave the Patterson home just days before his arrest.
Bobby Woods struggled with finding stability in his life. At one point, it was noted that he had used drugs, including "crank" and PCP, before the incident that led to his arrest.
Woods' life took a serious turn on April 30, 1997, when he went to the home of his ex-girlfriend Schwana. The details of what transpired that day eventually led to his arrest and capital murder charges.
Following his arrest, Woods would face numerous legal battles, including claims regarding his mental competency and intelligence. Appeals related to these matters would become a significant part of his story as well.
Bobby Wayne Woods was executed by lethal injection on December 3, 2009, for the crimes he committed in 1997.
On April 30, 1997, Bobby Wayne Woods committed a serious crime in Granbury, Texas. He entered the home of his ex-girlfriend through an open window while her children, 11-year-old Sarah Patterson and 9-year-old Cody Patterson, were asleep. Woods grabbed Sarah and began to physically assault her while Cody woke up to the chaos.
After restraining both children, he forced them to exit through the window into his vehicle. He drove them to a remote cemetery. There, Woods assaulted Cody and left him unconscious after a severe beating. Woods then took Sarah to another location, where he committed further violence against her. He subsequently ended Sarah's life by cutting her throat.
Cody regained consciousness and was able to escape. He crawled over a fence and drew attention from nearby people, leading to the police being notified about the abduction. Law enforcement officers later located Woods, who confessed to killing Sarah, stating that she would not be found alive. He then led them to her body.
Woods was arrested on the same day and charged with capital murder. His trial began in May 1998, leading to a guilty verdict and the death penalty. After several years of legal appeals, which included claims of mental impairment, Woods was executed by lethal injection on December 3, 2009.
