— Bobby Wayne Swisher
Bobby Wayne Swisher was born on March 2, 1976. He grew up in Virginia and faced many challenges during his childhood. His family life was troubled, and he experienced issues with his parents. His mother, Blanche Swisher, often spoke about how her son lacked discipline and struggled to listen to authority. Meanwhile, his father was reportedly absent at times and even denied being his father, which affected Bobby deeply.
As he grew older, Bobby's life took a difficult turn. He dropped out of high school and began working in construction. His lifestyle included partying and using drugs and alcohol, which contributed to his problems. He became known among his friends for his reckless behavior.
Bobby dealt with mental health issues, including severe depression. About four months before his trial, a doctor at the jail prescribed medication for these issues. However, he did not start taking the medication until two days before the trial, which likely impacted his ability to participate in his defense.
Despite these challenges, there were moments in Bobby's life where he sought to change. In 2002, while on death row, he found Christianity and began to explore his faith. During his time in prison, he spent much of his days reading the Bible and reflecting on his past.
On February 5, 1997, Bobby Wayne Swisher committed a violent crime that would change his life forever. Swisher entered the Enchanted Florist shop in Stuarts Draft, Virginia, where 22-year-old Dawn McNees Snyder was working late. He approached her with a butcher knife, threatening her. He forced Snyder to leave the shop and walk with him to a nearby field.
Once in the field, Swisher attacked Snyder. He sexually assaulted her, then decided to kill her because she had seen his face. He cut her throat and, after doing so, threw her into the South River. Though injured, Snyder struggled to crawl onto the bank of the river. Swisher reportedly walked along the riverbank, taunting her by asking if she was dead yet.
After he fled, Snyder succumbed to her injuries and died. Her body was discovered 16 days later, on February 21, 1997, in a field close to the river. The police arrested Swisher on February 23, after he confessed to a friend that he had killed her. During subsequent questioning by the police, Swisher admitted to the murder, and DNA evidence connected him to the crime.
In 1998, he was convicted of capital murder, abduction, and rape, and he was sentenced to death. After exhausting several appeals, Swisher was executed by lethal injection on July 23, 2003, in Virginia's Greensville Correctional Center. He did not request a last meal and made a final statement expressing a hope for others to find peace in Jesus Christ.
