murder story

On January 24, 1985, Bigler Jobe Stouffer II shot and killed Linda Kay Reaves and wounded Douglas Scott Ivens at Ivens's house in Oklahoma City. Stouffer had gone to the home claiming that his wife was in danger and asked to borrow a gun, which Ivens lent him. Once he had the gun, Stouffer shot Ivens three times, then approached Reaves while she was sleeping on the sofa and shot her twice in the head.

Stouffer was arrested the same day and initially denied the shootings but later admitted to shooting Ivens during a phone call from jail. The prosecution believed that Stouffer's motive for the shooting was to collect on a $2 million life insurance policy for Ivens.

He was charged with the murder of Reaves and the attempted murder of Ivens. During his trial in 1985, Stouffer claimed self-defense, saying that he shot Ivens while they were struggling over the gun. The jury found him guilty of both charges. On July 22, 1985, he was sentenced to death for murdering Reaves and given a life sentence for the attempted murder of Ivens.

Stouffer's conviction was overturned in 1999 due to ineffective legal representation, leading to a retrial in 2003. Again, he was found guilty and sentenced to death for Reaves's murder. Over the years, Stouffer filed multiple appeals, but all were denied.

In 2021, after a long legal battle, Stouffer's execution was scheduled. He continued to profess his innocence up until his execution on December 9, 2021. He was declared dead at 79 years old, making him the oldest person executed in Oklahoma. Stouffer’s last words were claims of innocence and a request for forgiveness for his executioners.
