Bernardo "Narding" Anzures was born in 1928 in Manila, Philippines, to actors Miguel Anzures and Rosa Aguirre. Following in his parents' footsteps, he began acting at a young age, appearing in pre-World War II films under Sampaguita Pictures and LVN Pictures. After the war, he was paired with actress Lilian Velez in several films produced by Philippine Pictures Inc., including "Binibiro Lamang Kita," "Ang Estudyante," and "Sa Kabukiran," directed by Velez's husband, Jose Climaco. Their on-screen chemistry made them a popular duo in Filipino cinema during the 1940s.
murder story
On June 26, 1948, at approximately 1:00 am, Anzures entered the home of Lilian Velez in Quezon City and fatally stabbed her and a housemaid in front of Velez's daughter, Vivian, and another housemaid. The attack was reportedly triggered by Anzures' distress over being replaced by Jaime de la Rosa as Velez's leading man in an upcoming film. After the murders, Anzures fled to Santa Cruz, Laguna, where he surrendered a few days later.
During his trial, Anzures initially pleaded insanity, claiming he was under a "fantastic spell" when he committed the crime. However, he later pleaded guilty on July 19, 1949, and was sentenced to two life terms in prison. He was also ordered to pay ₱5,000 to the relatives of each victim. Anzures was later pardoned by President Elpidio Quirino but died from tuberculosis shortly after his release. The exact motives for the killings were never fully determined.
