September 27, 2006Asher Weisgan was born in 1966. He grew up in Israel and eventually became a bus driver. His job involved transporting Palestinian workers to various locations. He lived in a settlement called Shvut Rachel, which is located in the West Bank.
Weisgan had connections with some Palestinians from a nearby village. He worked alongside them and shared food with them. This relationship lasted for several years. People who knew Weisgan described him as decent and respectful. They believed he did not harbor any hatred towards Arabs.
However, Weisgan’s life took a drastic turn as he became involved in political events in Israel. During this time, there was a significant plan by the Israeli government to disengage from Gaza. This plan aimed to withdraw Israeli troops from the region and evacuate settlers. Weisgan disagreed with this plan and wanted to disrupt it.
On August 17, 2005, he executed a violent act that shocked many. His early life showed a man who was integrated into a community but later became an individual consumed by political strife. Following his actions, Weisgan was arrested on the same day. His life ended in December 2006 when he committed suicide in prison.
On August 17, 2005, Asher Weisgan carried out a shooting spree in the West Bank settlement of Shiloh. He was a bus driver who picked up Palestinian workers, including his known acquaintances, to take them home after a day of work. Conflicting reports suggest that he stole a security guard's gun before opening fire on the workers he was driving. He killed four Palestinian men: Khalil Muhammad Ra'uf Saleh Wleiwel, Ahmad 'Ali Hassan Mansur, Bassam Mussa Ahmad 'Odeh Tawafshah, and Osama Mussa Ahmad 'Odeh Tawafshah.
During the shooting, he also injured two others. After his attack, Weisgan was either overpowered by security guards or chose to give himself up. His motivation was to disrupt the Israeli government's disengagement plan from Gaza by provoking a Palestinian response. He was taken into custody on the same day as the shooting.
On September 27, 2006, Weisgan was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison, one for each murder, along with an additional twelve years. He was ordered to pay damages to the victims' families. During court proceedings, he expressed no remorse for his actions.
Tragically, Weisgan died in prison on December 22, 2006, by hanging himself.
