— Arturo Juarez Suarez
Arturo Juarez Suarez was born on August 15, 1967. He grew up in Mexico, but later moved to the United States. He lived in California for several years, where he worked as a ranch hand. For about three to four years, he stayed in a trailer at a horse and cattle ranch in Auburn, California.
Arturo was estranged from his wife, Maria Isabela, and their daughter, who lived in Mexico. Despite the distance, he maintained contact with his wife’s family. He interacted regularly with his brothers-in-law, Jose Luis Martinez and Juan Manuel Martinez, as well as with Jose's family, who lived in Galt, California.
Throughout his life, tensions grew between Arturo and the Martinez family. He felt they did not accept him and often expressed feelings of resentment towards them. This growing frustration seemed to have a strong impact on him. He described experiencing pain and "nervousness" during this time.
Arturo also mentioned having a history of living alone and feeling isolated. His life in America involved working hard but also included struggles with his personal relationships. These feelings of discontent and resentment contributed to a turning point in his life, leading to a series of tragic events in 1998.
On July 14, 1998, Arturo Juarez Suarez committed a series of violent crimes in Auburn, California. He invited the family of his estranged wife to the ranch where he lived. When they arrived, he killed four members of the family: Jose Luis Martinez, his children Jack and Arele, and Jose's brother, Juan Manuel Martinez. The bodies were later found buried in a shallow grave.
Suarez also attacked the sister-in-law of his estranged wife. He raped her and then tied her up. The children were playing nearby while this was happening. After he committed the murders, he returned to the trailer where he had left the woman bound.
Suarez led the two children to the grave. He struck them with a tool and then buried them alongside their father and uncle. Autopsy results showed that the children were alive when they were buried.
After the crimes, the woman managed to free herself and seek help. Authorities were called to investigate the situation. Meanwhile, Suarez fled the scene and was arrested the following day, July 15.
He was taken into custody and later confessed to the murders. Suarez was convicted and sentenced to death on October 5, 2001.
