Antonio Lebaron Melton was connected to two robbery-related murders in Escambia County, Florida. The first case involved Ricky Saylor, a taxicab driver who was killed in 1990. Melton was 17 years old at the time. He was later convicted of first-degree felony murder and armed robbery in that case and received a life sentence.
The second case happened on January 23, 1991, at George Carter’s pawnshop in Pensacola. Melton and Bendleon Lewis entered the shop to rob it. Lewis pretended to pawn a necklace while Melton carried a .38-caliber gun. During the robbery, George Carter was shot and killed. Melton claimed the shooting happened during a struggle, but the court stated that Melton was holding the gun that fired the fatal shot.
Police arrested Melton and Lewis as they were leaving the pawnshop. Melton was charged with first-degree murder and robbery with a firearm. On February 5, 1992, Melton was convicted. The jury recommended the death penalty by an 8–4 vote. On May 19, 1992, he was sentenced to death for Carter’s murder and received a life sentence for the robbery.
Melton appealed for many years, but his conviction and death sentence were upheld. As of the latest court records, Antonio Lebaron Melton remains under a death sentence in Florida and has not been executed.
