Growing up in a deeply divided community, Antonio shared Emilio’s rage rooted in decades-old conflict. The Cabanillas family feud, sparked by boundary disputes and aggravated by their mother’s fatal fire, shaped a worldview of revenge. Like his brother, Antonio managed livestock and property but became alienated, living largely within the family’s paranoid bubble.

murder story

Under the cover of a rural hunting ploy, Antonio joined Emilio in the ambush. He fired into groups, killing and injuring indiscriminately in a bid to avenge his mother. Surviving witnesses recalled his cold determination; he later claimed he’d only fired warning shots—but evidence and behavior said otherwise.

Same courtroom, same sentence: 684 years in prison. The judge condemned their deliberate planning, cultural isolation, and affective impoverishment—ignoring civilized norms of life and empathy.

Antonio hanged himself with bed sheets in Badajoz prison’s infirmary as guards found him in the early morning of April 25, 2010—the release date he hoped for, had not been extended by the Parot Doctrine. A note was found expressing despair at the extension.
