1984Anthony Ray Westley was born on July 18, 1960. He grew up in Houston, Texas, specifically in a neighborhood known as the 5th ward. His early life was marked by poverty and his family faced many difficulties. He did not receive a high level of education and only completed the 8th grade.
As a young man, Westley became involved in various minor crimes. He struggled to find stable employment and often turned to illegal activities to support himself. Reports suggest that his childhood and upbringing were influenced by the environment around him, which included a neighborhood where crime was common.
By the time he reached his twenties, Westley's life choices led him to associate with individuals who were also involved in criminal activities. He engaged in drinking and drug use, which contributed to his troubled path. His early years set the stage for the events that would follow later in his life.
On April 13, 1984, Anthony Ray Westley, along with two accomplices, entered Eileen’s Bait and Tackle store in Harris County, Texas. They were armed and intended to rob the store. During the robbery, Chester Frank Hall, the store owner, walked in and confronted the robbers. This led to a shootout between Hall and the robbers. During the altercation, both Hall and one of Westley's accomplices were killed. Westley fled the scene with his surviving accomplice, who had been shot.
The following day, Westley surrendered to the police. During interrogation, he made statements that led to his arrest for murder. Evidence gathered at the scene included two firearms, but the specific weapon that fired the fatal shot was not recovered. Westley was eventually charged with capital murder. Despite claims of innocence and uncertainties about who fired the fatal shot, he was convicted and sentenced to death in 1985.
In the years that followed, several appeals were filed on his behalf, ultimately leading to debates about the fairness of his trial and the evidence against him. Westley maintained that he was not the shooter. Nevertheless, he was executed by lethal injection on May 13, 1997. His last statement expressed that he loved his family and denied killing anyone.
