Murder Story

On November 14, 1997, Anthony Spann committed a serious crime. He and another man, Lenard Philmore, were involved in a robbery. They were trying to leave town after a pawnshop robbery, so they decided to rob a bank to get money. To do this, Spann and Philmore planned to carjack a woman.

They searched for a victim at a shopping mall but did not find anyone. Eventually, they identified a woman driving a Lexus in a nice neighborhood. Spann and Philmore followed her until she parked in her driveway. Philmore approached her and asked to use her cell phone. He then forced her, Kazue Perron, into her car at gunpoint.

Philmore drove the Lexus with Perron inside, while Spann followed in his own car. They took her to an isolated area. There, Philmore shot Perron in the head and dumped her body in a canal. After the murder, they went to a bank where Philmore stole about $1,000 from a customer.

After the robbery, Spann and Philmore left the bank in Spann's Subaru. They later abandoned the Subaru and took Perron's Lexus. However, they were soon spotted by an undercover officer who recognized Spann. The officer called for backup, and they started following Spann in the Lexus. Spann tried to escape from the police, driving at high speeds. Eventually, the Lexus was found off the road after it blew a tire.

When police arrived, they saw four people fleeing into an orange grove nearby. The orchard owner noticed they were armed and called the police. The four men, including Spann, were later found hiding in the grove. Two guns were recovered in the nearby water, and evidence linked them to the murder of Kazue Perron.

Three days later, on November 17, 1997, Spann was arrested. He faced multiple charges, including first-degree murder and robbery. In June 2000, he was sentenced to death for the murder of Kazue Perron.
